Video Phone

A video phone is a type of telephone which can transmit audio and video during a connection. It may also be referred as a picture phone or camera phone. In contrast to a video mobile, a video phone carries the audio and video communication on ordinary telephone lines instead of through a cellular network. A video phone allows a caller to see the person on the other end of the line. Since a video phone can course through a reverse path, the receiver can also see the person who made the call as they speak. A video phone can facilitate communication between people with hearing difficulties who are not on the same location.

The use of a video phone is not as prevalent as that of video mobile phones. The reason for this is the high cost of acquiring a video phone, which is not very practical especially for home subscribers. Most users opt to get a video mobile instead, because they find it relatively more cost-effective. Since it contains several other features, a video mobile has an advantage over a video phone. Aside from this, instant messaging systems can also perform the same features using a computer and a webcam.

How does a video phone work?

A video phone operates on a duplex communication system. This means that two parties are connected in such a way that the communication flows both ways. During a call, audio and video are carried through the telephone lines and into the video phone. The video phone is equipped with a camera and a screen. The camera picks up the moving image of the user which is then sent through the telephone lines. The screen displays the image of the person on the other end of the line. As soon as a call is connected, the audio and video is automatically transmitted.

Why do you need a video phone?

A video phone allows you to see the person you are communicating with. At the same time, the person you are conversing with is able to see you on the screen. In general, a video phone is most useful to people with auditory disabilities. By using the video phone, they are able to communicate with each other using sign language. However, getting a video phone may not be very reasonable for most. Aside from the fact that they can be quite expensive for personal use, most people have access to computers through which they can make VoIP calls and use webcams.
